Probably emotionally charged in some way — funny, surprising, maybe a little unsettling. Your Monday meeting? Probably not.

This is why people can recall exactly where they were when they heard about a major national event but can't remember what they had for breakfast two days ago. Emotion is the brain's highlighter.

The Evolutionary Reason Your Brain Hoards Random Memories

From an evolutionary standpoint, this actually makes a lot of sense — even if it's maddening in a modern office context.

Our ancestors didn't need to remember quarterly projections. They needed to remember where the predators were, which berries were poisonous, and which members of the group were trustworthy. Unusual, emotionally loaded, or socially significant events were exactly the kind of information that kept people alive.

Novelty plays a huge role here. The brain releases dopamine when it encounters something new or unexpected, and dopamine helps cement memories. A strange classmate doing something bizarre? Dopamine spike. A recurring weekly status update with the same agenda? Almost zero dopamine. The brain literally rewards itself for paying attention to the weird stuff.

This is also why "flashbulb memories" — those almost photographic recollections of surprising or emotionally intense moments — feel so crisp compared to the blur of ordinary days. They're not necessarily more accurate, but they feel more real because they were tagged with so much emotional weight at the time.

Let's Clear Up the "Photographic Memory" Myth

While we're here — photographic memory, as most people imagine it, doesn't really exist. The scientific term is "eidetic memory," and genuine cases in adults are extraordinarily rare, possibly nonexistent in a verified, reproducible way.

What people usually mean when they say someone has a photographic memory is that they have an exceptional ability to encode and retrieve certain types of information. But even the sharpest human memory is reconstructive, not reproductive. Every time you recall a memory, you're partially rebuilding it — filling in gaps, unconsciously editing details, sometimes getting things flat-out wrong.

That vivid third-grade memory? It might be less accurate than it feels. Memory researchers like Elizabeth Loftus have shown repeatedly that our confident recollections are often a patchwork of what actually happened, what we've been told happened, and what our brain decided made the most sense.

So Why Can't You Remember the Meeting?

Beyond emotion and novelty, a few other factors make work-related information particularly hard to retain.

Passive listening. When you're sitting through a meeting without actively engaging — no note-taking, no questions, no problem-solving — your brain is essentially in spectator mode. Information passes through working memory without getting properly encoded.

Cognitive overload. The modern workday is relentless. When your brain is already juggling emails, Slack notifications, deadlines, and whatever personal stressor you walked in with, there's less bandwidth available to form strong new memories.

Lack of context and meaning. The brain holds onto information better when it can connect it to something it already knows. Abstract corporate language and decontextualized data points don't give the brain many hooks to latch onto.

Sleep deprivation. Memory consolidation happens primarily during sleep, particularly during deep slow-wave sleep and REM cycles. If you're not sleeping enough — and most Americans aren't — your brain is literally not finishing the filing process.

Practical Ways to Actually Make Things Stick

The good news is that memory isn't fixed. You can work with your brain's quirks instead of fighting them.

Make it emotional or weird. This is the basis of most classic memory techniques, including the "memory palace" method used by competitive memorizers. Attach an absurd image or strong feeling to the information you want to remember. The more ridiculous, the better — your brain loves novelty.

Say it out loud or write it down immediately. The act of articulating something — speaking it or writing it by hand — forces your brain to process it more deeply than passive listening does. Old-school note-taking beats typing for retention, according to multiple studies.

Space out your review. Spaced repetition — revisiting information at increasing intervals — is one of the most evidence-backed memory strategies out there. Apps like Anki are built around this principle, but even just reviewing your notes a few hours after a meeting, then again the next day, makes a significant difference.

Prioritize sleep. Seriously. No hack, supplement, or productivity system will compensate for a chronically sleep-deprived hippocampus.

Create connections. Link new information to things you already know or care about. If your manager mentions a new process, think about how it connects to something you've dealt with before. The brain stores memories in networks — the more connections, the sturdier the storage.

Your Brain Isn't Broken — It's Just Old

At the end of the day, your memory system was built for a world that no longer exists. It's optimized for survival in small social groups on the African savanna, not for retaining action items from asynchronous video calls.

That doesn't mean you're stuck. Understanding why your brain remembers what it does — and what it ignores — gives you real leverage. Work with the system. Make things emotional, novel, and meaningful. Give your brain the sleep it needs to do its filing.

And maybe cut yourself some slack. The fact that you still remember the weird kid from third grade doesn't mean your brain is failing you. It means it's doing exactly what it evolved to do — holding onto the vivid, the strange, and the human.

The boring meeting was never going to stand a chance.
