When a deadline gets close enough to feel real, the brain's dopamine system kicks into gear. Once you're in motion, momentum often takes over.

Name the feeling out loud. Research on affect labeling — the practice of identifying and naming your emotions — shows that putting feelings into words actually reduces their intensity in the brain. When you catch yourself avoiding something, try saying (or writing) exactly what you're feeling: "I'm avoiding this because I'm afraid it won't be good enough." It sounds simple, but it genuinely disrupts the automatic avoidance cycle.

Create artificial immediacy. Since your brain responds to near-term consequences, manufacture some. Tell a friend or coworker you'll send them your draft by noon. Book a meeting to discuss your progress. External accountability creates the kind of immediate stakes that your dopamine system actually responds to.

Work with your biology, not against it. If you know you're someone who hits a wall at 3 p.m., don't schedule your hardest tasks then. Your prefrontal cortex — the part of the brain responsible for planning, focus, and self-regulation — functions better at certain times of day for different people. Pay attention to when you naturally have more mental energy, and protect that time for the work that matters most.
